Amanda Simpson – 100% Woman
This, er, chick, in case you couldn’t tell by the photo, used to be a dude.
(Man, do I wish that I hadn’t already used She’s A Man, Baby! as the title for a post right about now…)
Amanda Simpson has been appointed by Barry as Senior Technical Adviser to the Commerce Department.
The whole transgender thing doesn’t bother me in the slightest. What does, though, is the fact that changing from a man to a woman is, aside from changing from alive to dead, pretty much the most massive upheaval possible.
The path leading to this decision must’ve been long and painful, both psychologically and physically. Having convinced yourself that life is only bearable if you become a member of the opposite sex (well, an honorary member, at any rate) doesn’t indicate to me the type of mindset best suited to public office and service.
But never mind. Because this is another of Barry’s “achievements.”
So starved of any tangible successes is The One that appointments such as this become victories in themselves. Barry can claim to be furthering the diversity agenda, which takes account of nothing but the personal circumstances of those in any given position. Placing a transgender thingy-magigy in this role gives Barry a solid B+ when it comes to inclusive policies (and, he hopes, provides cover for his complete inaction regarding gay marriage and don’t ask, don’t tell).
Ironically, Amanda does actually possess some decent experience, unlike all the other people that Zero has promoted due to their race/gender/ethnicity: an MBA, a MSc in Engineering, a BSc in Physics, and Simpson was a test pilot in the development stages of the T-39 and A-3 Skywarrior planes for Hughes Aircraft.

I think she might have had reservations about taking this position. From what was written, she did not want to be the token in the administration.
I don’t think that this appointment really made big points for Barry. They are seeing through him. They are finding out that dealing with Barry is about as meaningful as a one night stand.
