Der Spiegel: The Debt President

Whisper it softly, but maybe – just maybe – we’re approaching (from afar) a turning point in how the media covers The One.
Well, some parts of it, anyway. I’m not talking about Keith Olbermann, Brian Williams, Rick Sanchez, Chris Matthews or Joy Behar here, nor am I talking about TIME, Newsweek or The New York Times.
The domestic media adores Barry because he reflects their own left-wing stance and because he sells. Too feeble to even suck life-sustaining nourishment through a straw, the mainstream media has taken to daily intravenous shots of increasingly concentrated Obama-juice to cling to this mortal coil.
There is a problem, though: Barry’s ability to shift newspapers is taking a beating, as the public awakens to how bereft of answers his administration is. That’s the problem with raising people’s hopes – sooner or later (sooner, in this case), you’re bound to disappoint them. And so it is with the news that unemployment has risen from 7.6% to 9.4% under The One’s brief tenure. Sure, he’ll fall back on the Blame Bush Doctrine, but that’ll only get weaker every time that it’s used (and it’s looking pretty frail already).
As the problems become less deniable, the mainstream media will face a wonderful choice: either continue their infatuation with the president, and watch as their denial of reality kills circulation once and for all, or start scrutinizing the administration properly, and see readership levels skyrocket.
If nothing else, then simple personal ambition will kick in. American journalists will realize that they can make their career out of providing a perspective on events that no-one else does (well, except for the obvious).
But they’d better get a move on, because the international competition is rousing from its stupor and there aren’t enough shreds of credibility left to go around.
[Bill, thank you for your email on this, much appreciated.]

I pray that you are right and the press is starting to lose its infatuation with this self absorbed idiot. We need some accurate reporting if there is any hope of stopping his agenda from advancing.

Robert,
Hold not thy breath, lest ye turn blue and suffer a “Jackson”. (Demarol, anyone?) But, when a few “journalists” turn in articles about “The King’s New Clothes” that editors don’t spike and the circulation starts to rise, then it will be the hot story angle of the day and the feeding frenzy will begin.
