This would require the capacity for long-term planning and foresight – not to mention brains – on behalf of both Specter and the Republican Party, so is pretty much dead in the water from the outset.
But what if…
Arlen Specter wasn’t such a douchebag. What if he’s a sleeper cell, purposely primed to make this switch, infiltrate the Democrats and gain access to their innermost secrets (well, those few that remain unknown, at least) before triumphantly returning to the Republican Party and displaying his true conservative values. For the first time.
Nah, didn’t think so.
Still, why don’t the Republicans set plans in motion to try this?
It, clearly, would not do the battered reputation of politics much good, but we’ve gone past the DNR point now, anyway.
What more harm could it possibly do?
PS – There’s no way you didn’t already notice it, but please allow me to draw your attention to Barry’s face-stretching sh*t-eating grin in the background, regardless.
PPS – Having thought about it a little more, it seems pretty evident that Specter did in fact do the exact opposite of what I wrote above and punk’d us. Those devious dogs.

Specter timed his move perfectly. By leaving right before hearings on the new Supreme Court Justice are to begin, Specter can no longer be the lone Republican required to get a nominee out of committee. There still are other potential turn-coats to stopping a liberal replacement for Souter, but it won’t be Specter.

Ahh, that’s 15,000 grants worth and average of $666,666.67 each.
Fifteen thousand grants at two thirds of a million dollars each.
