Narcissus Would Be Jealous
The 1970s US-China rapprochement was achieved through a combination of boldness, intelligence and opportunism.
President Nixon dispatched Sec. of State Kissinger to China on a secret visit in 1971. China reciprocated the following year by inviting President Nixon to Beijing. It was the result of two years of covert diplomacy.
President Obama’s “outreach” to Iran has none of these features.
It is the equivalent of sending Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a text message and declaring that to be a breakthrough in US-Iranian relations.
It is aimed not at Iran but at the American electorate -- look, see, I am doing something about Iran! I’m pro-active! I am!
The other target audience is the president himself -- never before has there been a president so enamored with his own reflection.
