Conventional Wisdom Sucks
You can pretty much guarantee that any statement including the words “received wisdom” is a waste of breath. As is any verbal thought containing phrases such as “there’s no silver/magic bullet.” Please don’t do that.
Of course there’s not! No werewolves ’round here, far as I can see. I’d love to meet the mental pygmy responsible for coming up with that one (and just how did the entire panoply of American politicians become simultaneously convinced that, yes, it’s really a great saying?).
My personal favorite, however, is the picture above. Something can no longer be original, much less profound, if absolutely everyone knows about it. So President Obama’s repetition of the old Chinese-symbol-for-crisis-also-means-opportunity schtick is wearing agonizingly thin.
It’s effectively the same as saying that your funeral is my gain. Hmm, think I like my version better. It has a certain je ne sais quoi.
